Step #1:  Checklist for Prewriting

  • I read the prompt and thought about it.

  • I used a thinking map to organize my thoughts..

  • I thought about the audience for my writing.  

  • I thought about the purpose of my writing.

  • I stayed on topic.


Step #2:  Checklist for Drafting


  • I created a google doc rough draft..

  • I put my name on the doc.

  • I stayed on topic.

  • I checked that I responded to every part of the prompt.

  • I highlighted words I wasn’t sure how to spell or wanted to replace.


Step #3:  Checklist for Revising


  • My ideas are understandable and clearly presented.

  • I included details that were interesting and engaging.

  • I used a variety of sentence types.

  • I shared my writing with another student for peer review.



Step #4:  Checklist for Proofreading


  • All misspelled words have been identified.

  • All sentences begin with capital letters.

  • Sentences end in periods, question marks, or exclamation points.

  • dialogue is contained within quotation marks.

  • Paragraphs are indented.

  • Apostrophes are used correctly to show possession and for contractions.

  • Unnecessary words and repetition have been eliminated.

  • Missing words have been added in.

  • Subjects and verbs agree.

  • Sentences are varied.  (Run-on sentences have been broken up, short sentences have been combined.)

  • Sentence fragments have been made into complete sentences.

  • Proper nouns are capitalized.

  • Commas and semicolons are used correctly for sequences.

  • Strong active verbs have been used.

  • Specific nouns have been used to add details.

  • I have referred to the Writer’s Thesaurus for words to put a spark in my writing.

Step #5:  Checklist for publishing


  • I corrected all the errors I found proofreading.

  • I added pictures or charts.

  • I used the correct typing format.

  • I am ready to share my work.
